Can you talk a little bit about what drew you to the senior care industry? How difficult was your path? Has the industry changes a lot since you started?

While working on psychiatric units doing clinical triage, I encountered a great number of elderly who either were admitted for mental health emergencies or confusion. I realized people in the health system did not know how to handle dementia and its mental illness-like symptoms. On the other hand, I had a lot of experience working on end-of-life issues and hospice care. I quickly became aware that older people or people with chronic diseases were marginalized and did not receive comprehensive care. I have always been interested in working with the disfavored people in our society. I began exploring the senior care system in the United States and abroad. I decided to optimize what already existed and create wellness programs for people with dementia and a new paradigm in long term care. I believe that facility-driven care is for a small percentage of the elder population and that aging in place (in the community-care and/or home care) is the next frontier. Cost is a deterrent to aging in place, so I am also passionate about finding new ways to lower the cost of intensive and personalized care. I hope to motivate others and create a critical mass that will change the way we care for our elders, today. Thank you for visiting the Caregiverlist site.

I have been a CNA for about 4 years and loved my job!!! Very rewarding and challenging. I recently (much to my regret) let my certification expire, as I found that most of te companes that I was listed with were more the money than they were the clients and I felt just the opposite, but not that many families in my area were hiring independent caregivers....deciding instead to go with agencies. I had a good work record and always gave my All to my clients ad learned so much knowledge from them. I loved each and every one of them, as I found that caring for the elderly a passion I really love. Thank you for the time in reading this. Sherry Long
