Senior Housing News Announces Senor Living Design Winners

The winners of a first-ever Senior Home Architecture and Design competition, the SHN Design Awards, were announced by senior housing industry source, Senior Housing News.

This independent and non-trade organization-based competition received entries from more than 70 eldercare communities across the nation. Categories included: New Independent Living, New Assisted Living / Memory Care, New Skilled Nursing / Post-Acute Care, New Construction Continuing Care Retirement Community, Best Renovation / Repositioning, and New Affordable Senior Housing.

Entries were gathered between late October and early December 2013 and judging occurred within each category, with an emphasis on innovation, cutting-edge design and construction.                                       

The winners are:

  • New Independent Living: The Allegro (Jupiter, FL)

  • New Assisted Living / Memory Care: Waterstone at Wellesley (Wellesley Hills, MA)

  • New Skilled Nursing / Post-Acute Care: Wellbrooke of Westfield (Westfield, IN)

  • New Construction Continuing Care Retirement Community: The Mather (Evanston, IL)

  • Best Renovation / Repositioning: True North at North Hill (Needham, MA)

  • New Affordable Senior Housing: Village at Westerly Creek, Building 1 (Aurora, CO)

In a written statement, Senior Housing News Founder and Publisher George Yedinak said, “The innovative ideas and new design features we are seeing year after year suggest a very promising future for senior housing options and a highly competitive environment both for new development opportunities and the renovation of existing properties across senior living. We look forward to seeing what the new year brings for senior living design and architecture."                                                       

Senior care housing costs vary widely based on area and level of care. Nursing Home Facilities can cost anywhere from $180 - $400 per day with a variety of additional fees for beauty salon services, special meals and activities.Assisted Living Communities can cost up to $4,000 per month or more, plus additional fees for meals, special services and activities. Additional costs may be incurred for private duty caregiver services.
