Senior Care: Living to 100

Molly Schlanker, 5/11/2012

Senior care planning involves considering both health care needs as well as financial costs of care.  Questions to ask when planning for senior care include:

  • How much care will I need?
  • How much will the care cost?
  • How long will I live?

Technology and medical care advances are enabling Americans to live longer.  Living longer does come with new challenges.

A woman age 65 in the U.S.A. has a greater chance of needing long-term care than having her home burn down (a 10x greater chance).

Senior care choices include nursing home care, senior home care and assisted living.  Research the senior care options and costs to plan ahead for your senior care, but first, find out how long you might live based on your current health and lifestyle.  Caregiverlist's Nursing Home Directory provides the daily costs of nursing homes nationwide.  For example, the Alden Estates of Evanston, Illinois, costs $255 per day and Glencroft Care Center in Glendale, Arizona costs from $173 to $193 per day.  You can review the daily costs of nursing homes nationwide along with their Medicare ratings.

Living to 100” is a website which allows you to find out just how long you should live based on the information you enter.

We suggest doing this twice:  once with the information based on how healthy you would like to be living and a second time based on the truth!
