Some states have passed legislation requiring seniors to take additional tests for the issue or renewal of a driver's license beginning at a certain age. These laws protect both seniors and other drivers as age-related diseases such as memory loss or macular degeneration can develop slowly and make driving more difficult.
Sometimes a senior may be ready to retire from driving and the additional testing requirements offer them an opportunity to start the conversation about transportation alternatives. Other times, a family member or physician may recommend a supplemental driving performance evaluation because of changes in physical or mental conditions.
