Each state's Department of Health manages the certification and licensing guidelines for health care workers. All states require certification for nursing aides and some states offer additional certification programs for home health aides and personal care assistants. Caregiverlist Certified Caregiver training provides an 8-hour online training program for non-medical caregivers.
Certification may be required to work in a nursing home, assisted living community, hospital or as a senior home care agency caregiver or hospice caregiver. Long-term care insurance policies often require caregivers in the home to be certified and managed by a senior home care agency in order for the policy to pay for the care.
Training Required: Usually from 75 to 150 hours of classroom and clinical training.
Program Length: Varies from 6 weeks to 3 months depending on full-time or part-time enrollment.
Cost: $600 to $3,000. Some companies provide reimbursement for training, and scholarships and grant programs are usually available.
Admission Requirements: Clean background check, clean drug test, tuberculosis skin test, high school diploma or G.E.D., sometimes fingerprints required.
